No student wants to think about the possibility of not being accepted to a college or university because they need financial aid. George Washington University’s independent paper, GW Hatchet, has revealed that, in fact, schools such as GWU do just that. Says the report, “The University admitted publicly for the first time Friday that it puts hundreds of undergraduate applicants on its waitlist each year because they cannot pay GW’s tuition.”

Despite the fact that GWU has always tried to play this down, going so far as to practically deny it, the paper holds that this absolutely plays a role in the application process. The school went on defense. “Basically there are committees and they read all the applications, and they’re not looking at any financial need at all,” GW executive director of media relations Candace Smith said. “It’s only at the very end of the process when financial need is one of several factors taken into consideration.”
